A Balanced Diet for Weight Loss

Introduction

There are a million different weight loss diets out there these days.  Which one is right for you?  That depends on who you ask.  Atkins Diet supporters believe that carbohydrates should be drastically reduced in order to lose weight.  Advocates of rapid weight loss seem prefer diets like the Hallelujah Diet, which focus on a reduction of calories.  However, this article will focus on how to lose weight safely without using any fad diets.

Focus on Nutrition

No matter how you decide to lose weight, it is very important not to sacrifice nutrition.  What does this mean?  A healthy human diet consists of a variety of foods including different proportions of fats, proteins and carbohydrates.  For example if you completely cut out all fat from your daily diet, you may be putting your health at risk because certain fatty acids cannot be made by the body.  Instead of cutting out all fatty foods, work with these two concepts:

  1. Quality of food - Improve the quality of the food that you eat.  For example, eat healthy fats like olive oil, avocados, nuts, seeds and oily fish in moderation.  It is also important to go easy on sugar.  This includes fruit juice, fruits, sweeteners, and other sweetened food and drink.  Remember that alcohol also metabolizes like sugar.  We intend to post another article that explains in more detail which foods are healthy for weight loss.
  2. Quantity of food- If you have improved your quality of food but are still not losing weight, it’s time to look at the quantity of food being consumed.  You may need to cut back on calories a bit, but continue to eat a balanced diet.  In other words, continue to eat fats, carbs and proteins, just change your meal sizes.  Try to get at least 1500 calories per day.  Weight loss is not a race.

Building your diet around these simple concepts makes it easier to stay committed to weight loss for the long-term without as many cravings.  Instead of building just a diet, focus on building a lifestyle that provides you with better health for the rest of your life.  Be creative and try to find ways to make this lifestyle enjoyable.  Nobody wants to do something that they don’t enjoy.

Slow and Steady

Weight loss does not happen overnight like many fad diets lead you to believe.  Healthy weight loss is a step by step process that takes time.  To help people grasp this concept, think about how long it took to gain weight.  Did it happen overnight, or did it happen over a period of weeks, months and years?  It will be easier for a person to lose weight at slower rate, as part of a lifestyle change that sticks.  No fad diets.  No quick fixes.

The Bottom Line

Lasting weight loss does not come from fad diets or starving yourself.  Lasting weight loss comes from a conscious lifestyle change that feels good.  A healthy diet is part of that change.  An exercise program is part of that change.  Make your lifestyle changes slowly by putting together a program that is easy to stick with in the beginning.  As you begin losing weight and feeling better, you will become motivated to make additional lifestyle changes.  Remember to go slow, be creative and enjoy the journey.

If you have tried the ideas discussed above, and are not getting any results, you might consider investigating the health of your body with the help of a trained medical professional.  For example, a sluggish liver can make it very hard for a person to lose weight.  If your liver enzymes are elevated, there is a good chance your liver is sluggish.  Click here to read more about your liver as it relates to weight loss.

When it comes to losing weight, a balanced diet is a great place to start.  Incorporate other lifestyle changes, such as exercise, as you progress towards a healthier body.  The idea for lifelong weight management is to find ways to enjoy your healthy lifestyle and all that it has to offer.
